Why Flying Squirrel?
The Flying Squirrel
Why "Flying Squirrels"? Because a flying squirrel isn't just a regular squirrel with an added feature—it operates with a completely different, highly specialized mechanism to achieve movement. That specialized mechanism is our metaphor for neurodivergence in the art & creativity.
In many workplaces, the unique processing, intense focus, or different working styles of neurodivergent individuals might be seen as obstacles. We see them as superpowers and specialized skills that are essential for high-end art production.
The Gliding Ability: Some of our team members excel at seeing the final, cohesive tessellation (a surface without gaps or overlaps). This ability to visualize complex patterns and spatial relationships is a unique competitive advantage for large-scale public art commissions.
The Acorn Focus (Precision): Other team members possess an incredible ability for precision cutting and color theory application, focusing intensely on the tiny pieces (tesserae) that make up the whole. This specialized, detail-oriented focus ensures the professional-grade quality required for a high-quality mosaic.
We don't just "accommodate" talent; we integrate it. We understand that diverse processing styles lead to unique forms of creativity and technical excellence, making our work and our team stronger—achieving our goal of integrated employment at competitive market rate.
We Don't Just Build Mosaics; We Build Social Resilience.
Our enterprise exists to combat this digital-induced isolation by marketing the process of creation as the primary therapeutic intervention.
-
In-Person, Tactile Connection: We mandate a co-creation phase for every public mosaic, bringing diverse community members, trainees, and staff together in person to physically place the small tiles (tesserae). This tactile, physical engagement breaks down communication barriers and fosters tolerance and cross-cultural exchange that simple screen time cannot replicate.
-
The Loneliness Metric: Our focus moves beyond vague "wellness." We rigorously measure the verifiable effects of these participatory sessions, tracking the reduction of self-reported loneliness and the increase in participants' perceptions of social support—a critical differentiator that places us squarely in the realm of preventative public health funding.
-
Dignity-Affirming Labor: By providing integrated vocational training and market-rate wages to neurodivergent talent, we affirm that valuable, professional output comes from real, skilled human effort, offering an alternative to the often-toxic digital economy.
In short: We trade the fleeting, filtered connections of the digital sphere for the lasting, shared accomplishment of permanent public art.
